MEDICINAL PROPERTIES: The roots are alterative, anodyne, antiphlogistic, antitussive, astringent, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, styptic, tonic and vulnerary. They have an antibacterial action, inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Pneumococci etc. They are used to lower the blood pressure. The roots are used internally in the treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding, internal and external haemorrhage, bronchitis, rheumatism, stones in the kidney, bladder and gall, dysentery etc. The roots are harvested in the autumn from plants that are at least 3 years old. They are peeled and then dried. The stems are used in Tibetan medicine, where they are considered to have a bitter taste and a cooling potency. Febrifuge, they are used in the treatment of blood disorders and spreading fever of kidneys and intestines. As an effective blood detoxifier, Indian Madder treats skin disorders like hyperpigmentation, scabies, acne and allergies. The herb is also known to maintain overall health and is beneficial in the treatment of liver diseases, gall stones and amenorrhea.

USES / APPLICATIONS: Manjistha is a very good skincare herb. Used externally and internally, it makes the skin lustrous and glowing and helps to remove pimples, freckles and discoloration. Its finely crushed powder can be simply applied on the face after mixing it with little honey. A combination of 100 gms dried and crushed orange peels and 50 gms each of sandal powder, turmeric and Manjistha, makes an excellent face pack. So Manjistha not only prevents health problems, heals and cures, it beautifies as well. This is what makes it Ayurveda’s herb of choice for total healthcare, not just in the past, but today too. This ameliorates the vitiation of bhrajaka pitta (pitta from the skin) and imparts better complexion to the skin. Manjistha was held in high esteem by ancient sages in the treatment of skin diseases. It is widely used, till today, in various skin disorders like erysipelas, eczema, acne, scabies and allergic manifestations. Manjistha helps in controlling the irritation of nerves and pacifies the mind, hence salutary in epilepsy, especially of pitta type. The decoction of manjistha, triphala, daruharidra, guduci, katuka, nimba and vaca is used in gout with benefit. A valuable red dye is obtained from the root and stems. Roots are made into paste for application into ulcers, inflammations and skin troubles. A decoction of leaves and stem is used as a vermifuge.
